ADVA Optical Launches FSP Network Hypervisor

As legacy networks migrate to cloud optimized infrastructures, they want real-time cloud connectivity and multilayer network optimization, especially when it comes to software defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) centric network architectures. The new FSP Network Hypervisor from ADVA Optical Networking is going to provide these capabilities in a highly scalable open platform, which, according to the company, is unparalleled in the industry.

ADVA has developed these solutions so providers can automate service discovery and activation. When it is paired with the company's FSP 3000 DCI, it provides a network infrastructure solution with an abstracted view of the underlying physical infrastructure, enabling increased network automation and optimization by helping to decouple the complexities in managing photonic transmission systems.

The FSP Network Hypervisor has been engineered to work with all open source and commercial SDN controllers according to ADVA, and the platform has already been showcased in multiple public demos and various proof-of-concept installations.

“Our FSP Network Hypervisor is the next logical step in making our connectivity solutions truly open – in the data plane as well as in the control plane. At its core, it’s all about reducing complexity and helping CSPs and ICPs to be far more responsive to their networks’ needs,” said Christoph Glingener, CTO, COO, ADVA Optical Networking.

This platform is able to ensure the most effective path computation with real-time response to load changes and automatically react to network failures, which, according to Glingener, is something today’s static networks simply can’t do. He goes on to say that the company's FSP Network Hypervisor can now achieve in minutes what formerly took hours or even days, giving CSPs and ICPs that are virtualizing their optical networks a clear advantage.

The ADVA solution provides control of optical networks by allowing providers to cope with churn in bandwidth demand and enabling them to add or divert transport capacity for higher availability. It is possible to achieve higher availability by coordinating actions between packet and transport networks, which can also overcome outages of router ports or fiber links.

This is made possible because the FSP Network Hypervisor assists service providers with topology discovery and abstraction, connectivity management, path computation and notifications to in turn deliver self-provisioned services, automated resiliency and optimized resource utilization. These features are important for SDN/NFV networks looking for real-time cloud connectivity and multi-layer network optimization.
