Prepare for Next-Gen NFV Data Center Solutions

By Clayton Hamshar March 15, 2016

Data center technology is evolving quickly to keep pace with the changing demands of companies around the world that are looking for more capabilities without sacrificing reliability or security. A new strategic partnership between Lenovo and Juniper Networks has commenced in recognition of this immense opportunity in the networking market; the two companies will now combine their strengths to collaborate on developing cutting-edge next-generation data center infrastructure solutions.

Lenovo brings an extensive catalogue of x86-based servers and switches to the table with specialization in converged offerings and software-defined networking (SDN), whereas Juniper is a known innovator in networking with a wide range of hardware, software and technology that has vastly improved network infrastructure for countless customers. The partnership will primarily draw from Juniper’s strengths in networking technology and new strategies as well as Lenovo’s reliable servers and networking access.

The two companies will leverage the Open Network Install Environment (ONIE) model to develop and launch flexible software and solutions based on Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) standards. Furthermore, customers will benefit from simplified management and orchestration in the data center thanks to a combination of Lenovo’s xClarity management software and Juniper’s Network Director and Contrail SDN software. The major goal for these solutions is to provide simple network architecture that is unified from the access layer to the core network.

“Partnering with Lenovo expands Juniper’s strategy to deliver a full-stack solution for a wide-range of data centers, from the mid-range enterprise to private cloud and to hyper-scale customers,” said Rami Rahim, CEO of Juniper Networks. “We are excited about collaborating with Lenovo to leverage the full power of our IP-networking portfolio based on JunosOS and Contrail, in delivering the next generation of converged, hyper-converged, and hyper-scale solution to customers in China and globally.”

In addition to collaboration, Lenovo and Juniper will also complement each other’s product portfolios so that customers of both companies will have access to a more diverse and capable solution set as well as joint support. They will offer each other’s products as well as develop joint go-to-market plans and reseller models to bring these services to customers on a global basis. One of the main targets is China, where demand for SDN/NFV data center infrastructure is skyrocketing.

“We will continue to invest in the development and delivery of disruptive IT solutions to shape next-generation data centers,” said Gerry Smith, Lenovo’s Executive Vice President and COO. “Our partnership with Juniper Networks provides Lenovo access to an industry leading portfolio of products that include Software Defined Networking (SDN) solutions – essential for state-of-the-art data center offerings.”
