BT Mobile Installs Openet NFV Platform for MVNO Business

By Laura Stotler January 26, 2016

Mobile virtual network operators (MVNO) are fast becoming prime candidates for NFV adoption, taking advantage of its efficiencies and cost savings to get ahead in a rapidly growing and competitive market. BT Mobile has worked hard to differentiate its MVNO business, and has now installed Openet’s NFV-ready charging platform in an effort to streamline operations and get ahead of the competition.

The new NFV platform will be used to test and introduce new mobile services quickly and efficiently as well as to adopt new overall business models and help minimize costs. BT expects to take advantage of the Openet platform to improve customer experiences by gleaning real-time insights from user transactions and behavior. The end result will be a better customer interaction while users will also retain more control over their service and experiences.

“We required flexible technology that gives us the ability to react to rapidly changing market conditions,” said Mark O’Flaherty, IT director for BT Consumer. “Openet’s virtualized charging system is perfect for our needs and ensures we have a highly competitive UK market proposition that will help us quickly grow market share.”

The Openet platform offers visibility into customer account balances along with data use notifications and data allowance management. Customers may also make contract changes during the middle of a billing cycle, easily adding onto or changing their bundle plans on the fly.

BT Mobile’s NFV play puts it in league with MVNO competitors like AT&T, which is also using NFV to increase network capacity and lower costs. Other noteworthy service providers in the MVNO space that have adopted NFV in at least a portion of their networks include Vodafone, Verizon, Orange, Telefonica, Telecom Italia and NTT.
