ADVA, Juniper, Time Warner Cable Demo NFV at MEF Event

By Paula Bernier November 20, 2015

ADVA Optical Networking, Juniper Networks, and Time Warner Cable Business Class were part of a network functions virtualization demonstration at GEN15, an MEF event that took place this week in Dallas.

NFV involves powering networks using software running on industry-standard hardware – as opposed to using hardware-based appliances – so network operators can benefit from cost savings and become more agile.

The showcase was about more than just network elements and technology, ADVA explained. It also addressed how NFV can work with carriers’ existing business processes and operations and can be part of a smooth migration from today’s hardware-centric model.

"The focus is all on agile service creation,” ADVA CTO Christoph Glingener said. “NFV presents CSPs with a real opportunity to strip away complexities and develop new revenue streams. Installing and managing routers at customer premises is time consuming and labor intensive. By virtualizing these routers, CSPs can instantiate and operate them remotely and rapidly roll out additional services to their customers. These services include WAN optimization, firewalls and intrusion detection systems.”

The technology involved in the GEN15 demonstration included the ADVA FSP ProVM, which features hardware acceleration and hardware-assisted performance monitoring to optimize VNF performance.

As for Juniper Networks, earlier this month it expanded its NFV portfolio with a new solution called Cloud CPE, which the company describes as an automated, end-to-end NFV solution. It includes Contrail Service Orchestration and NFX250, a network services platform that can running multiple VNFs simultaneously from Juniper and third parties.

Also this week on the Time Warner Cable Business Class front, the service provider won the Best Marketing – Worldwide award at GEN15. The MEF 2015 Service Provider Awards recognize leadership in the development and delivering of global, regional, retail, and wholesale services and excellence in carrier Ethernet/third network innovation, marketing, and network monetization
