Swisscom Looks to NEC and NetCracker for its Cloud Transformation

By Michael Guta June 19, 2015

Telecom operators around the world are implementing the necessary infrastructure to deploy cloud solutions for their customers. While initially not everyone was onboard regarding cloud technology, today it is undeniably the engine that is driving innovation in IT. This includes telecoms, which are forging partnerships with network and IT companies to make their cloud-based transformation possible. Swisscom, Switzerland’s leading telecoms provider, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with NEC and NetCracker to help guide it through this process.

According to this agreement, NEC and NetCracker will assist the Swiss telecom to transform its business by jointly developing next-generation IT solutions to a fully cloud environment. The goal is to accelerate Swisscom’s development toward a cloud-based applications and virtualized infrastructure to optimize the use of physical and virtual network assets. If all goes according to plan, the company will showcase and operate a world-class hybrid network and access layer.

“Swisscom’s innovative nature combined with new cloud-based solutions and hybrid network capabilities will introduce the next-generation flexibility and agility required in Switzerland’s fast-paced telecommunications market,” said Andrew Feinberg, President and CEO at NetCracker.

The MOU also includes a collaborative effort to build a Center of Excellence for SDN/NFV and cloud transformation with the purpose of enabling Swisscom to optimize the use, testing and operations of SDN/NFV in physical and virtualized network components in real-world environments.

The collaboration will begin with the migration of IT applications to the cloud as well as virtualizing IT to reduce the CAPEX and OPEX of the company by accelerating the speed to market for new services and increasing operational agility.

One of the solutions NEC and NetCracker will be providing is their Network Orchestration solution. The Orchestration platform supports large-scale, unique systems integration capabilities so operators can effectively manage the complexities of architectural changes. The end-to-end service management platform for hybrid network environments is made up of physical and virtual components.

The Orchestration solution helps service providers migrate from traditional OSS to service and network orchestration for hybrid networks. Some of the features include:

Generate revenues – by creating centralized “app stores” consisting of homegrown and third-party VNFs, delivering targeted customer offers via embedded real-time and big data analytics, and monetize network resources and provide Network-as-a-Service offerings.

Increase service agility – by leveraging a flexible environment for onboarding third-party VNFs, extending the world of virtualization and reduce time-to-market for new offerings, and apply an agile DevOps approach to service modeling through an intuitive and flexible service design environment.

Improve customer experience – by delivering and personalizing converged services quickly, enable flexible self-service capabilities with online service modeling and activation, and ensure fast service provisioning with online execution monitoring.

Reduce expenses – by supporting automated policy-driven operations with limited or no human involvement, providing dynamic configuration and capacity-on-demand for SDN and NFV, and using network and IT assets and services efficiently.

Since the first telegraph service was established in Switzerland in 1852, the country has been in the forefront of deploying the latest communications solutions for its citizenry. This latest collaboration between Swisscom, NEC and NetCracker ensures individual consumers and organizations will be able to communicate on any platform, in a physical or virtualized environment.
