Netronome Introduces New NFV, SDN Software, High-performance NICs

By Paula Bernier March 04, 2014

Netronome today took the wraps off new network interface cards – for network functions virtualization and software-defined networking implementations – that the company says are unprecedented in the speed and density they deliver.

This is important because it can support the high demands for performance data centers now face.

The FlowNIC PCIe Gen3 cards, which can drop into a standard server and have four interfaces, scale up to 200gbps. They work with Netronome’s new FlowEnvironment switch acceleration software, which was also unveiled today and is available now.

Jarrod Siket, Netronome’s senior vice president and general manager of marketing, explains that these cards can be leveraged by enterprises, equipment companies, and anybody else that puts together networking solutions to functionality such as gateways to connect legacy and new IP-based networks, or other middle box applications such as firewalling and load balancing. Because of their scale, he adds, they can connect to the Intel compute complex and feed all traffic to apps that are resident on the host side.

Cisco and NTT are among the companies now leveraging the cards, which will be generally available toward the middle of this year. Cisco is using the Netronome solution to power its cyber security boxes, which deliver next-generation firewall, and intrusion detection and prevention capabilities, says Siket. NTT is using the cards and software in its SDN gateway, which sits between the service providers multiple data centers to replace traditional routers so the data centers can all be under SDN control.

(SDN and NFV will be the focus of Software Telco Congress – The NFV Event, which NFVZone parent company, TMC, will be holding Aug. 11-14 at The Rio – Las Vegas.)

The Netronome software is compliant with a wide variety of SDN specifications, including OVS, OpenFlow, OpenStack, DPDK, VxLAN, NV-GRE, Linux, and Hyper-V.
