Comings & Goings: Brocade Appoints Benson Schliesser to Distinguished Engineer

By Kasey Schefflin-Emrich January 20, 2014

Networking solutions provider Brocade has appointed Benson Schliesser, who has almost 20 years of experience in the field, in the role of distinguished engineer. The California-based company offers reliable and high-performance network solutions that enable organizations to smoothly transition to a world where applications and information can be found anywhere.

As distinguished engineer for Brocade, Schliesser will help drive its software-define networking and network functions virtualization strategies and position Brocade as a leader in various areas including Ethernet fabrics, software networking and data center routing and switching. He will also work with customers to develop next-generation architectures, as well as obtain feedback to make sure products meet the requirements of the intended customers.

Prior to joining Brocade, Schliesser was a distinguished engineer in the office of the chief technology officer at Juniper Networks. Before that he served as a principal engineer in the service provider CTO office at Cisco Systems.

He is also the chair of the Network Virtualization Overlay Working Group for the Internet Engineering Task Force and is a member of the many organizations such as ETSI ISG NFV, IEEE Communications Society and OpenDaylight Project.

"Benson's history of leadership roles as an end-user, a vendor and in industry associations is a clear indication of his broad understanding of the evolving networking landscape and technologies," Ken Cheng, chief technology officer and vice president of corporate development and emerging business, said in a statement. "His past experience with leading large-scale cloud service rollouts and data center virtualization deployments will make Benson an invaluable resource for Brocade customers who are focused on adopting SDN and NFV technologies."

Brocade's hiring of Schliesser is part of the company's move to expand its presence in the data center networking market. This has included acquiring Vyatta, a privately-held company that provides software-based virtual router, virtual firewall and VPN products, in 2012, as well as naming Ari Bose Brocade's chief information officer towards the end of last year.
