Nakina, RAD Offer Major Cableco NFV Interoperability Solution

By Paula Bernier January 13, 2014

Network management outfit Nakina Systems and access equipment RAD say they have proven interoperability for a major cable operator in one of the first commercial deployments of network functions virtualization. The name of the service provider was not disclosed.

This news is important because it signals that NFV is being used in real-world deployments by top-tier network operators, and that different solutions from different vendors on this front can successfully work together.

RAD President Uri Zilberman stated that as a result of this advancement service provider customers have the flexibility to maintain a multi-version inventory of service capable, MEF-compliant devices.

“Our joint solution frees installation and operations staff from implementing complex and costly device-specific configuration processes,” he adds.

The deployment involves Nakina’s NI-Director software and RAD’s 203A and 205A  ETX-2 Carrier Ethernet demarcation devices. The solution described above involves a special kind of preconfiguration process that allows for faster time to deployment.

Nakina CEO Mary O’Neill explains, “At the time the service is designed, existing resources are fully configured and left in a service ready state. Virtual versions of CPE units that are not yet present are pre-provisioned. As each of the endpoints of the service is installed, NI-Director matches the physical device to a virtual resource that has been pre-provisioned and fully automates the commissioning and activation of the device in accordance with the service provider’s standards.”

It’s interesting to note that RAD customers include major carriers Bharti Airtel, BT, Claro, CenturyLink, China Mobile, China Telecom, DT, Embratel, FT, Hutchison, KDDI, KPN, SingTel, SoftBank, Telefonia, Telekom Austria, TeliaSonera, Telstra, Verizon, and Vodafone. While these are companies with a traditional on the telco, as opposed to the cable operator, side, they are other companies in the industry that could potentially benefit from what was learned in the Nakina-RAD interoperability activity.

SNS Research estimates SDN and NFV will be worth $4 billion in 2014, and expects to see compound annual growth in this space of nearly 60 percent in the next 6 years.

NFV rose to prominence in industry discussions following the formation of the ETSI Network Functions Virtualization Industry Specification Group. AT&T, BT Group, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telecom Italia, Telefonica and Verizon drove the creation of this ETSI group, which came together a year ago November and has seen many companies join the charge since.

The key goals of the NFV Working Group are to reduce equipment costs and power consumption, improve time to market, enable the availability of multiple applications on a single network appliance with the multi-version and multi-tenancy capabilities and encourage a more dynamic ecosystem through the development and use of software-only solutions.
