DartPoints Picks ADVA for NFV

By Paula Bernier February 23, 2016

A month after announcing the acquisition of Overture, and a week after announcing the launch of a new division and product suite focused on NFV, ADVA Optical Networking revealed that DartPoints is using its network functions virtualization technology to transform its data center services and generate new revenue opportunities.

ADVA Ensemble was selected by Dallas-based DartPoints to support multi-vendor virtual network functions that either it or its customers can manage, and to erect multitenancy VNFs. Virtual firewalls and routers managed by DartPoints will be the first implementations of this technology.

"One of the key reasons we chose ADVA Optical Networking's pure-play virtualization platform was because it enables us to mix and match software with open hardware for high velocity and service agility," said Satya Baddipudi, CTO, DartPoints. "The ADVA Ensemble solution also gives us the freedom to locate functions where they'll be most efficient and where they best meet our customers' needs. What's more, with the Ensemble Orchestrator we're able to provision a single instance of a virtualized network function across multiple customers, which creates an especially attractive total cost of ownership model."

The ADVA Ensemble solution is actually a collection of products. That includes a virtualization platform that has Carrier Ethernet 2.0 functionality, does flow steering across physical and virtual network systems, and that does virtual switching. That runs on the ADVA FSP 150vSE Intel-based server, which has a carrier-class chassis. Working together, these two technologies provide network and services access, and can host multiple combinations of VNFs in a service chain. The Ensemble Orchestrator, meanwhile, allows VNF provisioning in multivendor environments.

Ensemble is also the name of ADVA Optical Networking’s new NFV division. James Buchanan has been selected as Ensemble’s general manager, Chris Swan is heading up the group’s business development, and Overture co-founder Prayson Pate is its CTO. Ensemble was the name Overture used to market its controller and orchestration functionality; ADVA in January announced the acquisition of Overture.
