OPNFV Project Expands with Three New Member Companies

By Laura Stotler July 01, 2015

The open source OPNFV Project has expanded with the addition of several new members. The Open Platform for NFV project is designed to facilitate development of NFV products and services through a flexible, carrier-grade platform. The collaborative endeavor is part of the Linux Foundation, which sponsors independently funded software projects that promote collaborative development.

Altera, Brain4Net and CertusNet have all joined the project as Silver members, and will be instrumental in driving innovation and development of NFV solutions. The companies join more than 60 other companies, including service providers, commercial suppliers and developers, all committed to supporting an open source development platform for NFV.

OPNFV recently announced the Arno software release, the foundation for its open source platform. It lays the groundwork for development of virtual network functions (VNF) applications, testing and other innovation. Arno features a basic NFV infrastructure build along with virtual infrastructure management (VIM) components for the ETSI compliant NFV architecture. All of this comes together to provide the basis for NFV development and innovation.

"Collaboration is key to accelerating the open source software development of NFV, and with Arno now available, we're seeing that vision materialize," said Heather Kirksey, director, OPNFV. "We look forward to the contributions our newest members will bring to the community with their knowledge of FPGA technologies, orchestration and control solutions for SDN and VNF."

Altera specializes in programmable solutions for electronic systems development, including field-programmable gate arrays (FFGAs), system on chips (SOCs) and programmable logic devices. Brain4Net focuses on network orchestration and control solutions with a specialization in multi-vendor networks. The company offers a network orchestration platform, set VNFs and a SDN controller. CertusNet provides core technologies as well as Elastic Network solutions in China based on SDN and NFV. In addition to elastic cloud services, the company enables triple-play stream media monitoring, customer experience assurance and a smart city business platform.
