Midokura Announces Certification with Red Hat, Integration with Mirantis

By Paula Bernier June 29, 2016

Midokura today at the Red Hat Summit in San Francisco announced its Midokura Enterprise MidoNet network virtualization technology is now certified with Red Hat OpenStack Platform 8.

This follows by just a week Midokura’s announcement of its integration with Mirantis OpenStack 8.0 and Fuel, its open source deployment and control plane for OpenStack. That’s expected to help expedite the creation of Fuel and OpenStack 8.0 deployments.

Susan Wu of Midokura said that in the past people did a lot of do-it-yourself projects with OpenStack, but more recently people are seeking out packaged offerings on this front. Wu spoke to me last week at DockerCon in Seattle. She said we can expect to see Midokura, which is best known for its software-centric networking solutions, do more with containers and container orchestration, including integration with container orchestration solutions. (Container orchestration was an important topic at DockerCon, where Docker announced it was integrating orchestration in its latest Engine release.)

Midokura is a six-year-old network virtualization company, which late in 2014 announced it would open source its MidoNet technology. The company says MidoNet is a stable, scalable, easy to deploy, and fully open virtual networking solution on which anyone can innovate. It leverages an Apache 2 license, which is used under OpenStack; can run on any hardware; and Midokura says it functions well in production environments. The company has open sourced MidoNet, a solution now it use by organizations in more than 120 countries.

The company, which is based in San Francisco and has offices in Barcelona and Tokyo, earlier this month revealed that it has raised $20.4 million in a Series B round. That brings its total investment to date to $44 million. Wu said the company plans to use the money to expand its U.S.-based executive team and speed up the selling system.
