Vodafone Italy and Huawei Unveil NFV-Powered VoLTE Service

By Laura Stotler July 22, 2015

Vodafone Italy has upped the stakes in the NFV game with a rollout of voice over LTE (VoLTE) service, taking competitors’ proof of concept moves in recent months to the next level. The company has teamed up with Huawei to launch the service on a cloud-based IMS core network, utilizing NFV-compliant core networking solutions.

The new service utilizes virtualized IMS and element management systems, which are managed by management and orchestration virtualized network function management (MANO-VNFM). The NFV component builds on trials previously conducted in January along with ZTE, China Unicom and HP.

Last month, mobile operator Spark New Zealand achieved a VoLTE proof of concept project using the Rhino Sentinel Application Server from OpenCloud to create a virtualized VoLTE, IMS and NFV infrastructure. The project tested out a range of voice and video calling services among VoLTE handsets as well as from VoLTE to SIP soft clients and legacy communication devices.

In April, Telefonica Germany launched a new VoLTE service for 4G subscribers through its O2 brand. The service is available for the Samsung Galaxy S5 and additional devices are slated for future support.

It is believed that the Vodafone service is the largest VoLTE rollout of its kind utilizing NFV, thanks to the previous proof of concept trials and the operator’s partnership with Huawei.

“These innovations are the fruits of partnerships with major operators and joint solution optimization as ongoing processes at Huawei,” said a statement from the company “Media plane acceleration, fully automated operation, NFV-based capability exposure, and intelligent network slicing are key areas for NFV consolidation. These future goals are the core of Huawei’s commitment to facilitating cloud transformation for operators.”
