SDN Poised for 'Massive Uptake'

By Paula Bernier April 08, 2016

Early adopters of software-defined networking are proving the value of this disruptive technology, and that should lead others to follow in their footsteps, leading to “massive uptake” of SDN, according to BCC Research in a new study.

“This adoption,” comments BCC Research analyst Anand Gijare, “will be equally driven by end users who seek greater value for their network investments and suppliers that migrate their product lines to SDN and retire traditional systems.”

Global market revenues for SDN, which were estimated at nearly $2.4 billion last year, are poised to reach $56.1 billion by 2020, according to BCC Research, noting that’s a compound annual growth rate of more than 88 percent. The firm expects that SDN will experience triple-digit growth in some market regions. In North America, where the SDN space was valued at $1.1 billion last year, we can expect to see valuation grow to $26.8 billion by 2020, BCC Research says. Meanwhile, SDN in the Asia Pacific will grow from $235 million to $8.6 billion in that time frame.

Nearly every enterprise and network provider is considering or implementing SDN, according to BCC Research. That’s because SDN is expected to help these network operators become more agile by automating their networks through the use of policies and software-centric architectures, and making better use of the resources in those networks.

While many in the industry talk about the activities, excitement around, and growth potential for SDN, far fewer get into the nitty gritty of where that growth will occur. But, as I noted in a posting yesterday about the new Coriant SDN professional services effort, Tom Nolle of CIMI Corp. in 2013 suggested that professional services offered by network infrastructure equipment and software providers like Ericsson is one SDN category poised for growth.
