Zhone Joins the Open Networking Foundation

By Paula Bernier October 03, 2013

Zhone Technologies Inc. has joined the Open Networking Foundation (ONF).

ONF was established in 2011 by Deutsche Telekom, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Verizon and Yahoo, and now has more than 100 members. Its mission is to accelerate the adoption of open SDN.

"Operators have long sought the freedom and flexibility that Software-Defined Networks bring," said Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer at Zhone Technologies. "Zhone Technologies continues to analyze SDN requirements, while evolving and maturing its commitment to the OpenFlow Standard and other evolving SDN standards to address the needs of its commercial and service provider customers and their deployments on a global basis."

SDN is an architecture that separates the control and data planes of the network and automatically looks at flows in the network, understanding the requirements of those different flows and using the network to provide those flows with the appropriate bandwidth and other network resources. This applications-first networking mindset is a significant change from how networks are designed and work today. It takes the traditional siloed approach to networking and effectively lays it on its side.

OpenFlow is the first SDN standard to be defined, notes the Open Networking Foundation, which is behind the testing effort.

ONF recently launched an OpenFlow testing program for networking hardware such as switches and routers, as well as network software. The actual testing is performed by accredited independent testing labs. ONF offers OpenFlow Switch Specification 1.0.1 Certificates of Conformance for Full Conformance, Layer 3 Conformance, and Layer 2 Conformance.

Solutions that pass the tests receive an ONF Certificate of Conformance and permission to use the ONF OpenFlow Conformance Program logo for their compliant products and website. To participate, vendors are encouraged to contact an approved test lab, complete an application form, and work with the lab to define a mutually-agreeable schedule for product delivery.
