Procera Networks Helps Tier 1 and 2 Operators with NFV Strategies

The challenges operators face today not only come from traditional industry players, but also nontraditional over-the-top content (OTT) providers that have completely disrupted the delivery of voice, data and video services. Addressing this problem requires operators to introduce products to market faster with greater flexibility and scalability. Network functions virtualization (NFV) is giving operators these functionalities so they can better compete. As Procera Networks continues to increase the number of its Tier 1 and 2 customer base, it is also becoming key to the NFV strategies these customers are deploying.

In the past 12 months, Procera has signed a record number of contracts and deployments, resulting in 36 new Tier 1 service providers, and bringing its total deployments to more than 50 the installation of its virtualized DPI technology for Tier 1 and Tier 2 operators. The company's technology is used by fixed, mobile, Wi-Fi, and satellite providers for traffic management, policy charging and control, IT and regulatory analytics.

“Procera saw significant market momentum in 2016 and had record bookings, sales, and  deployments. Our growth has been fueled by the strength of our core technology's ability to reveal more granular OTT analytics than our competition and by the flexibility and robustness of our virtualized delivery of those capabilities,” said Lyn Cantor, President and CEO at Procera Networks.

Deep packet inspection (DPI) is a technology used to inspect data packets sent between computers over a network operating at the seventh layer, or the application layer of the Open System Interconnection (OSI) reference model. That allows users to identify, categorize and track down unwanted code or data and either stop the packets or reroute them.

The Procera network management and DPI technology is increasingly being deployed in a virtualized format as operators look for more flexible, scalable and secure solutions. In 2016, the company experienced a 177 percent increase in virtualized commercial deployments compared to the previous year, with expectations the growth will continue in 2017.

In addressing the NFV demand, the company just completed VNF testing with the New IP Agency (NIA) using its PacketLogic/V, Procera's virtualized DPI solution suite, which was conducted by the European Advanced Network Test Center (EANTC). The result proved full compatibility with VNF solutions from Dell, Huawei, and ZTE, thus expanding its ecosystem compatibility with leading VNF/orchestration vendors. 

The PacketLogic/V platforms allow operators to use industry standard, off-the-shelf hardware and software virtual machine environments so they can enable flexible deployments of Procera PacketLogic capabilities.
