Metaswitch and VMware: A Fruitful NFV Partnership

By Casey Houser February 02, 2016

Metaswitch, a developer of software for network operators, knows that it does not act alone. In the realm of software-defined networking, it must partner with other leading companies to properly deliver network functions virtualization (NFV) to its customers. One strong partner in this chain is VMware.

A recent announcement from Metaswitch sings the praises of this partnership, which began in 2012 when it launched its first virtualized network function. Remember that this type of networking still only exists as the newcomer, a burgeoning but ultimately young set of ideas for how to transform the way enterprise connect their businesses and transmit data. Metaswitch’s Perimeta, a virtualized session border controller, and Project Clearwater, an open source IP media subsystem core, began this company’s path down that road.

VMware’s responsibility in the partnership has been to provide a home, an infrastructure, for these network functions. Even though this pairing of responsibilities only began in 2012, many of Metaswitch’s clients rely on VMware for many of their daily needs regarding the use of virtualization. This makes its both a convenient and familiar software environment for those clients who have come to trust the VMware name and already know how to work with its products.

This jump into software-defined networking has even extended into VMware’s own ranks where it has launched a new partner program and has begun developing a new set of services directed solely toward the use of virtual network functions.

Simon Dredge, the director of technical marketing at Metaswitch, noted that VMware has consistently provided his own customers with peace of mind. Those customers reportedly see reliable and functional software when they look at the VMware – two qualities any company would not mind harnessing.

What does this mean for the future of both companies? For VMware, its vCloud NFV software and Ready for NFV accreditation program are rife for expansion and development. Metaswitch, as a partner in that accreditation program, can continue to seek technical validation of its own products by matching what VMware continues to deliver.
