Parallel Wireless Introduces Intel-Based Enterprise vRAN Solution

Parallel Wireless recently made an industry first with the announcement of a 3GPP-compliant, end-to-end enterprise virtualized RAN (vRAN) solution, the first such solution to be based on Cellular Access Point (CAP)/enterprise femto reference designs from Intel. These designs integrate 3G, 4G/LTE and Wi-Fi with real-time network orchestration, interference mitigation and resource optimization, enabling mobile operators to deploy enterprise heterogeneous networks, or HetNets, more cost effectively.

Paralell has introduced solutions before to help mobile carriers put HetNets together, such as the vC-RAN reference architectures the company released in November. However, in the case of its latest release, Parallel is giving operators the flexibility to choose and original device manufacturer (ODM) CAP hardware that leverages the Intel Transcede small cell SoC, which can help greatly reduce capital expenditure (CapEx).

This is possible because these reference designs combine 3G, 4G/LTE and Wi-Fi functions within a single footprint, using common network connectivity and power. This allows for simplified installation and maintenance.

Dubbed the Parallel Wireless fully virtualized HetNet Gateway, this new solution takes advantage of both hardware and software advances from Intel, including Intel Xeon processor-based servers. It’s these advances that facilitate the delivery of a high-performance, fully virtualized enterprise RAN on standard high-volume servers.

“Parallel Wireless has developed the industry's first scalable, low-cost, high-performance enterprise vRAN solution enabled by key Intel technologies,” said Steve Papa, founder and CEO of Parallel Wireless. “We are excited to work closely with Intel and its ecosystem partners Alpha Networks, and additional partners to be announced in upcoming weeks, to introduce a solution for enterprises of any size at one-tenth of the cost of currently-available enterprise small cell solutions.”

Papa went on to add that, with Parallel’s new vRAN solution, deployment is reduced from days to just a few hours, while eliminating the need for RF planning and extensive system integration. This is because Parallel Wireless HetNet Gateway makes enterprise vRAN self-configuring, self-optimizing and self-healing.
