OpenStack Issues New NFV Report

By Paula Bernier January 22, 2016

The OpenStack Foundation this week was trumpeting its success, saying it has emerged as the network functions virtualization infrastructure platform of choice, and releasing a new report on NFV adoption and business cases.

The report “OpenStack Foundation Report: Accelerating NFV Delivery with OpenStack” can be found at www.openstack.org/nfv. The reports lays out the advantages of using OpenStack and NFV, talks about the role of the foundation in NFV development, and highlights many of the top-tier service providers that have embraced OpenStack.

NFV promises to enable communications service providers to reduce their costs related to managing, maintaining, and updating their networks, and to free them from the grip of their suppliers by allowing them to more easily pick-and-choose from a wider array of solutions vendors.

Speaking of software-centric networks, ONOS this week was also telling its story. The open source SDN networking operating system for service provider networks effort yesterday revealed that Verizon has joined the project.

"Verizon recognizes the potential of ONOS as an open source SDN platform and the service provider solutions it enables, as well as the promise it holds to transform the networking industry," said Brian Higgins, Vice President of Network Planning at Verizon. "By joining the partnership, we hope to advance open source SDN and NFV solutions based on ONOS and to help shape the future of this ecosystem."

SNS Research, which recently issued the report " The SDN, NFV & Network Virtualization Ecosystem: 2015 - 2030 - Opportunities, Challenges, Strategies & Forecasts", estimates service provider NFV and SDN investments will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 54 percent between 2015 and 2020, accounting for more than $20 billion in revenue by the end of 2020. Investments on orchestration platforms, SNS says, will account for nearly $2 billion in revenue by the end of 2020, representing nearly 10 percent of all service provider SDN and NFV spending. The research comes just before the industry event NFV Expo, which will pose these numbers to panels of professionals all through next week.
