Spanish Operator Taps Affirmed Networks for vEPC

By Paula Bernier December 14, 2015

Aire Networks has chosen Affirmed Networks to provide it with a virtual evolved packet core solution, which will act as the centerpiece for its network functions virtualization strategy. The Spanish mobile network operator expects to lower its operating costs and realize flexibility that will allow it to deliver new services more quickly due to its deployment of the Affirmed Networks’ Mobile Content Cloud.

NFV is seeing growing interest and adoption by service providers, as Mohammed Shanableh, vice president of global operations of Affirmed Networks, notes in a press release issued today. “This evolution is occurring across operators of all sizes, in all geographies, as our customers continue to recognize the transformational benefits this technology can provide from both a technology and business perspective,” he says.

In fact, AT&T itself is an Affirmed Networks customer. As Andre Fuetsch, senior vice president of architecture and design at AT&T, told me in an interview this fall, the communications service provider giant is also leveraging Affirmed Networks vEPC technology.

Affirmed Networks earlier this month announced Canadian service provider TELUS will also be using its Mobile Content Cloud solution, in this case to support its Internet of Things service offerings. And just last month Affirmed Networks revealed that Saudi Telecom Co., the largest telecommunications service provider in the Middle East and North Africa, is using its vEPC for IoT/machine-to-machine communications.

In addition to its vEPC solution, Affirmed Networks also sells a virtualized Wi-Fi gateway, which it introduced in late October. The product uses Intel AES New Instructions and Multi-Buffer Crypto for IPsec Library to enable secure tunneling. This software-only solution is beneficial, according to the company, due to its scalability, speed of deployment, and lower total cost of ownership (which Affirmed Networks says is about half that of hardware-based offerings). The Wi-Fi gateway, Angela Whiteform, vice president of product management and marketing at Affirmed Networks, told me in October, addresses the fact that 50 to 80 percent of mobile operator traffic comes in via Wi-Fi.
