Leading Lights Awards for Most Innovative SDN Product Strategy and Best New Product for Mobile Goes to Brocade

By Joe Rizzo June 25, 2015

Leading Lights has now been running its annual awards program, which is run by online publication Light Reading, for 11 years. It is considered to be the communications industry's leading awards program. Light Reading's reputation for fiercely independent analysis makes this the most credible and authoritative awards program in the communications industry.

There were a lot of entries this year as they numbered in the hundreds. "The volume and quality of the entries we received across our 24 categories, which this year included specialist awards for SDN, NFV, IoT and Gigabit broadband for the first time, shows how seriously the industry takes these awards, which are now in their 11th year. The winners are an exceptional group of companies that have every right to be proud of their achievements and progress during the past year." These remarks were made by Light Reading Editor-in-Chief Ray Le Maistre.

It was announced earlier this week that Brocade was one of the winners. In fact, it appears that Brocade actually won awards in two distinct categories. The award for Most Innovative SDN Product Strategy went to Brocade for its SDN Controller. Additionally, the Brocade Virtual Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) solution won for Best New Product for Mobile.

Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. is an American technology company specializing in data and storage networking products. The company's products include network-attached storage, storage area network (SAN) directors and switches, data center switches, Virtual Cluster Switching, software-defined networking (SDN) and network virtualization, just to mention a few.

Kelly Herrell, who is the senior vice president and general manager, software networking at Brocade, made the following comments about the awards, "We're honored that the industry experts at Light Reading and analysts at Heavy Reading have recognized Brocade and Brocade-powered customer solutions in multiple award categories. These awards signify the tremendous innovation enabled by the New IP and the networking technologies that Brocade is delivering today to customers worldwide."

According to Brocade, the vEPC solution provides a complete set of functions for the mobile control plane, session management and data planeacross all LTE core network elements. The Brocade vEPC, gives operators the ability to have a flexible architecture, which in turn, allows them to scale mobile workloads to support different traffic profiles. The goal is that this will allow mobile operators to further reduce operating and capital expenses.

The Leading Lights program focuses on next-generation communications technologies, applications, services, and strategies. The winners were announced at an awards dinner at Chicago's Field Museum earlier this month on June 8.
