Qosmos Embraces Arno for NFV

By Paula Bernier June 15, 2015

Deep packet inspection company Qosmos last week announced its endorsement of Arno, an open source platform.

Jerome Tollet, CTO at Qosmos, commented: “It will greatly facilitate and accelerate adoption of NFV in future networks.”

Arno is the first release out of the Open Platform for NFV effort, a collaborative project at The Linux Foundation. Arno’s release earlier this month came just eight months after the formation of the OPNFV, which came together to create a carrier-grade, integrated, open source platform to accelerate the introduction of NFV products and services.

This developer-focused release provides an initial build of the ETSI NFV architecture’s NFV Infrastructure and Virtual Infrastructure Manager components with the goal of allowing those developing virtual network functions, exploring NFV deployment, or wanting to do NFV performance and use case testing to more easily do so.

“OPNFV has met one of its major goals by creating an integrated build, deployment and testing environment that accelerates NFV implementation and interoperability,” said Prodip Sen, chairman of the OPNFV board of directors. “With Arno, we now have a solid foundation for testing some of the key resource orchestration and network control components for NFV.”

As for Qosmos, it has been working on a multi-stage strategy related to NFV and SDN. The first stage involves the Qosmos Service Aware Module virtual switch solution; the second involves the delivery of its DPI capability as a VNF component; and the third has to do with a new service chaining module.

According to Infonetics Research, the carrier NFV and SDN market will be worth $11 billion by 2018. NFV and SDN software will account for 20 percent of that. Displaced revenue will account for 12 percent of it. And virtualized network functions and SDN ports on optical gear, routers, and switches, and other new product categories, will account for 68 percent of that.
