Comings & Goings: ClearPath Networks Adds Marc Cohn to Marketing Team

By Steve Anderson June 11, 2015

There's no denying that there's been plenty of growth in the field of network functions virtualization (NFV), thanks in no small part to its ability to save on costs while providing the same or even better levels of service than its alternatives. ClearPath Networks, meanwhile, is looking to augment its own position in the growing NFV market, and to that end has brought in a fairly major figure in the NFV field: Marc Cohn.

Cohn joins ClearPath Networks as its new senior vice president of marketing, and will be in charge of ClearPath's entire worldwide marketing apparatus. With a scope of responsibility like that in his lap, it would be easy to wonder what kind of qualifications he brings to the table to merit such rank, and those he has hands-down. Cohn is part of the senior leadership of the Open Networking Foundation (ONF), which gives him a background in not only NFV, but also in software-defined networking (SDN). Cohn also serves as the Silver Member board representative on the OpenDaylight Board of Directors, and was also an advisor to the ETSI NFV ISG leadership, routinely seen contributing to the ETSI NFV blog and the ONF blog. Just to top it off, he's also the editor of SDxCentral's NFV Insider blog, a major force in the field.

That's plenty of points to his credit, and testimonials came in from all over to back up said points. ClearPath Networks CEO Cliff Young noted that Cohn had “...solid industry knowledge, SDN / NFV thought leadership, and (a) proven marketing and product management track record...” to bring into play, thus strengthening ClearPath's position as a leader in the virtual CPE side of the NFV market. What's more, ONF's executive director Dan Pitt brought in some comment as well, noting that Cohn's work as area director for the market area gave ONF “visibility...on a global basis,” working to make clear “...the value of the technology.”

Formerly part of Ciena Corporation, where he had a hand in the construction of its Agility SDN / NFV software business unit, it's readily apparent that Cohn has an extensive background in the NFV field. Take all his previous credits coupled with the sheer number of endorsements involved, and that makes for a terrific package. The question that remains, of course, is whether all of this can readily transfer over to a marketing role in NFV, and by all indications the answer would be yes, it can. After all, there are few better ways to market a product than to know plenty about it; it allows for the best kinds of marketing to be put to use. It allows for clear delineation of benefits, and how the available products can best meet needs a company might be experiencing. The more product knowledge marketing has, the better the output can be tailored to the needs of the firms in the market.

Cohn seems to have everything that's needed to do a bang-up job in marketing NFV material, and seeing just what he does with all that capability should be impressive. ClearPath Networks' competitors, meanwhile, should be looking to bolster up marketing efforts accordingly, because it's going to get a lot harder to be heard over Cohn's likely impressive marketing style.
