Cobham Wireless Introduces Pooled-Use NFV Validation Solution

By Paula Bernier June 10, 2015

Cobham Wireless has launched a test bed for vendors that sell and service providers that deploy, network functions virtualization solutions.

The TeraVM elastic test bed was built to enable organizations to validate their NFV solutions in an environment that is shared, and therefore lower cost for all comers. Sharing test assets makes sense, Cobham notes, given that enterprises, services providers, vendors typically have low utilization (usually around 20 percent) of their test assets.

The idea of making the test environment more elastic dovetails nicely with the vision of NFV itself, Cobham points out. Robert Winters, TeraVM director at Cobham Wireless, adds: "The flexibility of the TeraVM elastic test bed allows service providers to adopt a 'follow the sun' pooled resource model, significantly increasing the utilization rates of their testing assets and improving productivity as a result."

Cobham is best known as a British aerospace and defense supplier. Its new wireless business sells an array of microelectronics, video-related products, and wireless solutions, including test and measurement gear. Cobham Wireless products include stand-alone and modular RF and wireless test instruments; IP traffic emulation and NFV solutions; and ATE systems for electronics production. Cobham Wireless’s LTE product line includes a complete range of end-to-end test systems that cover R&D, performance, service, and manufacturing test applications for LTE-A TDD and FDD network equipment and terminals. Cobham Wireless is also a founding member of the 5GIC (5G Innovation Centre) technology research program led by the University of Surrey in the U.K.

The company’s test portfolio includes virtual test solutions for SDN deployments that Aeroflex got via its February 2014 acquisition of Shenick Network Systems. Cobham bought Aeroflex in May for $920 million.

The company, at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, demonstrated its 4G LTE-A test solution, the TeraVM for NFV validation, and new algorithms for a 5G air interface.
