NFV & SDN Zone Week in Review: Cyan, NetCracker, Telstra

By Paula Bernier May 16, 2015

Cyan, NetCracker, and Telstra all made announcements this week in the network functions virtualization and/or software-defined networking arena.

Probably the most interesting news came from NetCracker, which introduced version 10 of its billing and operational support systems platform. One important new feature with this version is that big data analytics functionality is included and can be used across all domains of the solution.

“Advanced analytics and biometrics-driven CEM solutions will help operators humanize their customer experience initiatives and deliver expected levels of customer experience,” said Sheryl Kingstone, research director at 451 Research.

The news from Cyan was about yet another ecosystem expansion. Among the companies that have recently joined Cyan’s Blue Orbit ecosystem – which is focused on providing carriers with demonstrated, preintegrated and validated NFV and SDN solutions – are ADI Engineering, Aria Networks, Brocade, GENBAND, Intel, VMware, and Wind River.

As for Telstra, the company this week offered more details on its SDN platform, which it got through the acquisition of Pacnet Ltd. According to Telstra, the news is that it has extended SDN into the optical layer to allow for provisioning of up to 100G and automated fault restoration across global PoPs.

Jim Clarke, Telstra’s director of marketing, product, and pricing for international, explained: "Extending our global PEN platform into the optical layer is the natural next step in our SDN strategy and by providing this infrastructure on demand, we're able to significantly shorten the provisioning cycle times and better meet our customers' growing high-bandwidth needs. This is an exciting milestone in Telstra's SDN journey and by leveraging our high quality infrastructure assets and Pacnet's leadership in early adoption of SDN technology, we will continue to innovate and deliver cost-efficient virtualized network resources to our customers."
