HP Unveils a Flurry of NFV Solutions

By Paula Bernier May 07, 2015

Communications service providers, which have been working on network functions virtualization for a few years now, are beginning to move from proof-of-concept to actual implementation stage. CSP suppliers like HP are cranking out new and updated NFV solutions in an effort to win their business as they transform their networks to be more software-centric.

HP this week unveiled a platform called HP NFV System, version 3.0 of its NFV Director management and orchestration solution, and new services to help carriers move to network functions virtualization. All three are expected to be available in the third quarter.

Designed for communications service providers like the telcos, HP NFV System is pre-integrated with HP Helion OpenStack Carrier Grade and aims to help expedite the CSP move to NFV environments.

The NFV System is actually a collection of kits that include both HP hardware and software that is optimized for use in NFV implementations. The HP NFV Starter Kit is a turnkey solution that includes carrier-grade compute nodes, and high-availability control nodes running virtual infrastructure management software. Physical infrastructure management software are also part of the mix. And Helion can be included.

The HP NFV Compute Kit, which can be paired with the HP NFV Starter Kit, includes server nodes that run virtual network functions workloads, and the ability to run fast-packet processing. The HP NFV Control Kit packages Helion physical and virtual infrastructure management software including HP Central Management Console, HP Intelligent Management Center, and HP OneView. And the HP NFV Storage Kit, which also can be combined with the starter kit, brings additional storage capacity to the table for content delivery network and other storage-intensive use cases.

NFV Director, meanwhile, can work with CSPs’ existing operational support systems and includes new analytics abilities that can help carriers improve network usage, allow for more efficient traffic steering, and increase uptime.
