The Cool Continues: Gartner Adds NetNumber to 'Cool Vendor' Roster

By Steve Anderson April 29, 2015

Recently we spotted a move from Gartner to offer up lists of “cool vendors,” or those vendors that catch Gartner's interest due to a particular technology being offered or a new solution to a problem. The recent move had OnSIP landing one of these rankings thanks to its work in unified communications, but it's far from alone. NetNumber also walked away with a “cool vendor” designation from Gartner, and for a few different reasons.

Reports note that NetNumber landed the designation in the communications service provider (CSP) field, thanks largely to its work in the network function virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN) areas. A corresponding report released with the awards took a look at companies whose product lines have had particular impact on the CSP infrastructure field, and NetNumber's line had quite a bit to offer on that front.

Much of the award seems to have focused on NetNumber's TITAN platform, which offers up a variety of services useful in the CSP field. TITAN offers not only centralized signaling and routing control (CSRC), but offers it for several platforms at once. TITAN can also provide the necessary infrastructure for signaling control, as well as handling both subscriber database measures and policy enforcement tools, making for an overall safer and more readily-controlled atmosphere. Basically, TITAN is poised to allow smoother, more effective delivery of services to users while at the same time making the network core easier to manage.

Considering that TITAN has already been put in use on 350 servers across the span of five different continents, with over 200 billion transactions a month going through the system, it's easy to see why Gartner took an interest in NetNumber's systems. NetNumber's president and CEO, Brad Boston, offered up some further comment on just what may have sparked Gartner's interest, saying “Our innovative software platform enables carriers to deploy next-generation services faster and with lower OPEX investment, while also easing the transition from legacy networks to IP. Carriers are taking notice that continuing to deploy more silos of network functions in the core infrastructure is no longer effective and actually decreases their service agility.”

It's really not too much of a surprise that NetNumber would land a “Cool Vendor” designation if for no other reason than its TITAN system offers so much value to potential users. Most businesses are inclined to save money where possible, and simplifying the network core would certainly seem like a good way to do that. With plenty of CSPs in the market now, finding ways to differentiate from the pack is imperative, and TITAN might just be the key to landing some of that differentiation. Since TITAN can also help ease the move to next generation services, that's a further feather in its already stuffed cap.

Only time will tell if NetNumber can live up to its designation, but it's certainly got a noteworthy app in its possession to help drive such a concept forward. TITAN might be one of the biggest things to hit CSPs in some time, and may well drive a whole new future to come.
