ADC Vendor Array Networks Helps Launch OPNFV Project

By Paula Bernier December 17, 2014

There are so many industry groups forming around network functions virtualization and software-defined networking these days, sometimes it’s hard to keep track of all of them. The latest entry to the list is the OPNFV Project. And Array Networks Inc. this week announced it is a silver founding member of the effort.

OPNFV Project is a community of suppliers in the industry working to develop an open source reference platform for NFV. The platform is intended to help accelerate the implementation of NFV and the introduction of new products and services springing from it.

As for Array, it sells application delivery controllers, which sit in front of application servers to perform load balancing and, in some cases, more advanced functions. Array nearly doubled its ADC revenue from 2012 to 2013, and as of October had more than 2,000 ADC customers.

The company has already introduced some solutions to address the move to more software-centric networks, and it expects to expand that portfolio in the year ahead with enterprise private cloud, IaaS, and SaaS solutions. In June, for example, Array launched a multitenant application delivery controller appliance called the AVX10650; it is targeted at IaaS providers that want to support multiple customers and enterprises that want to support multiple applications, on a single appliance.

Research firm Gartner recently included Array in its application delivery controller Magic Quadrant report. Others listed are A10 Networks, Barracuda Networks, Citrix Systems, F5 Networks, KEMP Technologies, PIOlink, Sangfor, Radware, and Riverbed. A10, Barracuda, and PIOlink each recently issued IPOs, raising more than $300 million collectively. Gartner noted, adding this injection of capital into the $1.6 billion ADC market is likely to drive addition R&D investment and innovation. Gartner also noted that ADCs can help address some of the security concerns that have arisen in recent months due to breaches in retail and other verticals.
