NFV & SDN Zone Week in Review: More Product Launches & German Transportation Firm Taps IBM

By Paula Bernier October 25, 2014

Suppliers can introduce an array of new products and partnerships, but things really get interesting is when clients put those solutions into action, so we’ll start there with our NFV & SDN Zone Week in Review this week.

That places us in Germany, where public transportation company Stuttgarter Strassenbahnen AG is using the IBM Cloud to manage its business, which handles 171 million bus and light rail passengers annually. The IBM software-defined storage and Flash solution, which replaced a solution from SAP, allowed for such improvements as the reduction of wage processing by the human resources department from six hours to six minutes.

Here’s a rundown of some of the NFV and SDN new product announcements for the week.

CPLANE Networks commercially launched its Dynamic Virtual Networks Interconnect product for wide area networks. This software-defined networking solution, which is based on OpenStack, leverages the company’s SDN Controller to enable the creation of Layer 2 and 3 VPNs over MPLS. That way, data center operations can connect applications spanning multiple data centers. DVNI also allows for automatic discovery; label-switched path traffic optimization planning, modeling and analysis for fast reroutes and alternate paths; policy-based management for overbooking, security, and QoS; and resource-based admission control and traffic shaping.

Hetnet Software now offers new software called HetnetPM. It addresses network management including orchestration and management of virtual network environments, and performance and fault management of legacy networks from one system.

Luxoft Holding, Inc., a provider of software development services, unveiled SuperCloud, an NFV orchestration platform.

Meanwhile, QualiSystems has partnered with Empowered Networks, a Canadian Systems Integrator that develops network services for data centers and laboratories across the country.
