NFV & SDN Zone Week in Review: Brocade Buys Vistapointe, NTT Powers Honda Network

By Paula Bernier September 20, 2014

This week NFV and SDN saw Brocade purchase Vistapointe, Honda Motor Co. tap NTT, and Telefonica reveal an R&D effort with Cisco. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the details.

Vistapointe, which Brocade bought for an undisclosed amount in an all-cash transaction, sells visibility and analytics solutions to mobile network operators, especially global mobile network operators. These solutions are software-based and embrace NFV technologies, according to Brocade.

This is just Brocade’s latest move related to NFV and SDN, as the company in the past has purchased Vyatta, whose solutions it continues to expand upon; has been an active participant in OpenDaylight Project; and has been working with Telefónica to create network functions virtualization deployment and performance benchmarks.

On a separate front, Telefonica this week revealed it is working with Cisco Systems at the carrier’s R&D facilities in Spain to test multivendor interoperability and various use cases of solutions involving the combination of converged IP, optical networks, and software-defined networking. Telefonica’s goal for this effort is to find ways to lower its costs, make scaling more efficient, and streamline its network architecture. The carrier also previously said it was working also with Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, and Infinera on this front.

Speaking of leading service providers in the NFV and SDN arena, NTT announced this week that Honda Motor Co. is leveraging its Enterprise Cloud service for its global supplier network communications.

NTT is a pioneer in SDN, having launched NTT Enterprise Cloud last year and taking it global earlier this year.

In other NFV and SDN this week,Kontron, a provider of embedded computing technology, announced it is now part of the Wind River Titanium Cloud NFV partner program. As a result, Kontron will be able to offer its commercial-off-the-shelf hardware platforms pre-validated with Wind River NFV solutions to telecom service providers that need virtualization cloud environments.
