Ulticom's Diameter Signaling Controller Selected for EPC Product Line

By Rory Lidstone November 20, 2013

Ulticom, the company best known for its Diameter signaling controller (DSC) product, has entered into an OEM agreement with an unnamed “major Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer.” Under the agreement, Ulticom will supply its DSC as a key component of the telecom’s evolved packet core (EPC) product line.

The Ulticom DSC offers mobile network operators and IPX providers a way to manage signaling growth, profit from mobile data services and even optimize 4G LTE roaming. Earlier this year, the company introduced a white-label version of its signaling controller that can be branded with the partner vendor’s name alongside a major update to the software-only solution that added a higher degree of customization, down to the code level.

"Ulticom's value proposition is ideal for Telecom Equipment Manufacturers and Systems Integrators. We bring industry-leading Diameter signaling expertise with our DSC offering," said Bruce Swail, CEO of Ulticom, in a statement. "I'm proud of the Ulticom team for creating such a rich and robust solution now to be deployed on one of the largest networks in the world. Our software-based DSC is an ideal solution for Diameter traffic management in LTE networks."

With data usage at an all-time high and growing at an extremely high rate — global mobile broadband subscriptions are expected to grow 400 percent between now and 2019 — many providers have turned to signaling as a way to cope. Diameter-based signaling in particular is considered essential for many network operators for enabling key network capabilities such as roaming, advanced mobile data services, charging and policy management.

Indeed, Ulticom DSC provides mobile network and roaming hub operators, as well as telecom equipment manufacturers, with a turnkey, Linux-based software solution that can be deployed as a standalone system or integrated into other products. Furthermore, because it is a software-based solution, DSC is well-suited to virtualized environments, making it an ideal fit with the widespread use of network functions virtualization.
