Telefonica Concludes NFV/SDN PoC with NEC/NetCracker

By Paula Bernier September 15, 2015

The NFV SDN proof of concept Telefonica Business Solutions was doing with NEC Corp. and its company NetCracker Technology has come to a successful conclusion, according to the companies, which issued a Sept. 10 press release to announce that fact.

The effort involved the creation of an end-to-end solution—including an orchestrator and several virtual network functions like a virtualized firewall and SSL termination gateway—that deliver a virtualized VPN service and allow for automated provisioning.

“We are pleased with the results of this PoC and look forward to expanding our relationship with Telefonica as the market and demand for virtualized technologies grow,” says Frank DeTraglia, chief customer officer at NetCracker.

Telefonica has, and has had, a number of NFV/SDN activities with various vendors in the works.

For example Telefonica also has a co-creation agreement with Alcatel-Lucent to advance NFV via the vendor’s CloudBand NFV platform. The carrier, which is the third-largest global telecommunications on the planet, also has joined forces with Ericsson on an R&D program through which the companies will collaborate “in deep-dive technical investigations and testing, addressing areas such as network transformation and migration, virtualization of network functions, network security, SDN technology as well as network virtualization infrastructure, management and orchestration.” The carrier also has an SDN R&D effort running with Cisco. Telefonica has also done Mobile World Congress SDN demos with Infinera.

Telefonica’s UNICA initiative is what it calls its move to a new open, virtualized infrastructure. The company, which has been involved in the ETSI NFV group along with leading operators AT&T and Verizon, has said that network as a service, multitenancy, and the ability to virtually provision customer premises equipment are among the applications it is focused most heavily on relative to UNICA.
