Large Service Providers Biggest Market for NFV Orchestration

By Laura Stotler February 22, 2016

Service providers are proving to be the biggest consumers of network functions virtualization (NFV) orchestration software and are driving market revenues. The findings are part of a new report from research firm IHS that examines the NFV orchestration software market and the key players.

The new NFV Orchestration Software Vendor Leadership Analysis examines the 10 leading vendors in the space and finds that Brocade is rapidly becoming a leader in the market. Additional companies analyzed include Ciena Blue Planet, Cisco, Dell, Ericsson, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Huawei, Juniper, NEC/Netcracker and Nokia. IHS analyzed the 10 market leaders to gain a better understanding of how suppliers are impacting the sector as well as to single out the movers and shakers.

“Each of the vendors profiled in our NFV leadership report brings a unique vision to the market, are providing innovation and thought leadership to support their vision, and will play an important role in shaping NFV orchestration with their products, partnerships and contributions to open source initiatives,” said Michael Howard, senior research director and advisor for carrier networks at IHS.

According to the report, Brocade has built market share through acquisitions and by creating a comprehensive software portfolio. Blue Planet, a division of Ciena, has gained traction because of its multi-vendor and domain functionality as well as by offering a standards-based NFV platform and associated services. The company has also made inroads among large service providers that previously only worked with incumbent suppliers.

Cisco brings a known name, a slew of existing customer relationships and expertise in NFV orchestration and data center IT management to its NFV game while Dell also brings a reputable brand name along with a comprehensive NFV hardware and software portfolio. Ericsson is approaching the market through collaborative partnerships while HP Enterprise is banking on its early investments and strategy in the NFV space.

IHS notes that Huawei is investing in both NFV and software-defined networking (SDN) solutions and Juniper is making inroads based on its use of standard protocols, which facilitate third-party relationships. NEC/Netcracker emphasizes OSS/BSS strengths necessary for hybrid networks comprised of both physical and virtual networks and Nokia is performing well in the NFV management and orchestration (MANO) space and building out from there into broader NFV and SDN projects.

“The big revenue opportunities in NFV are with big service providers who want a prime vendor or two that can put together all the multi-vendor software, hardware, partners and services to develop and deploy virtualization to help them meet their fairly urgent needs for automation, agility and services differentiation,” added Howard.
