Silver Peak SD-WAN Solution Gains VMware Ready Status for NFV

By Paula Bernier June 06, 2016

Silver Peak’s Unity EdgeConnect has achieved VMware Ready status for NFV, the SD-WAN vendor has announced. The VMware Ready program is a co-branding benefit of the Technology Alliance Partner program to help customers more easily identify interoperable solutions in the marketplace.

SD-WAN and virtualization are among the most important technological developments in the marketplace at this moment. While virtualization and VMware have been around for a long while in tech industry terms, and have already seen broad deployment, SD-WAN is a much newer technology that is red hot and that some believe is now reaching a tipping point. David Hughes, CEO of Silver Peak, recently told me he believes SD-WAN will go mainstream this year.

The technology is attractive to businesses because it can dramatically lower the cost of and simplifies the delivery of high performance cloud, unified communications, and data center applications to remote offices using any combination of access technologies, including but not limited to LTE and MPLS.

The SD-WAN market is poised to be worth $3.2 billion by 2018, $12.1 billion by 2019, or $7.5 billion by 2020, depending upon you who talk to. Hughes of Silver Peak says multisite retailers are among the verticals warming to SD-WAN. This especially true, he says, in scenarios in which they are looking for solutions for new locations that are not already connected.

But there is a lot of competition for these customers, as in addition to Silver Peak, the SD-WAN market also includes Cisco, Citrix, CloudGenix, FatPipe Networks, Glue Networks, Ipanema technologies, Nuage Networks, Ocedo, Riverbed, SimpleWAN, Talari, Versa Networks, and Viptela.

Going forward, analytics is expected to play a growing role in the SD-WAN arena. That’s because the visibility it provides network operators about their networks can be leveraged by analytics to either influence user behavior or set the most appropriate application or security policies.
