Metaswitch Aims to Get Real About New Business Models

By Paula Bernier May 17, 2016

Software is not only eating the world, it’s changing the world, causing disruption, and creating the need and opportunity for new business models. This may all seem like a lot of fun – that is, until your business is impacted by it, noted Steve Gleave, Metaswitch Networks senior vice president of marketing. But never fear, he told the Metaswitch Forum audience assembled this week in Scottsdale, Ariz., we can do this.

“The good news is this should be pretty easy, because we’ve built new models in the past,” he said. “This is not alien to us.”

New Models for Network Operators is the tagline of Metaswitch Forum 2016, which began this morning with an opening address by Gleave, followed by keynotes by Metaswitch CEO Martin Lund and Apollo 13 flight director Gene Kranz, who is commonly associated with the phrase failure is not an option.

“That’s what forum is about,” Gleave said. “It’s about models that make sense.”

There are some pretty nutty demonstrations and solutions out there that don’t make a whole lot of sense, Gleave added, noting that at CES he saw a car that let people look inside their refrigerators. But at the Detroit Auto Show, he added, there was a Chrysler Pacifica with a hybrid plug in and an “Are We There Yet?” feature for the kids in the back. Those, he indicated, are features that consumers are actually more likely to want and need.

Metaswitch, he added, will help customers define and implement models that will make sense for them and their customers. And at Metaswitch Forum, he said, the company aims to cut through the hype around things like the digital transformation, the Internet of Things, and software-centric networks and virtualization, to address what it will take to make all this reality in a way that makes sense.
