6WIND and Kalray Improve Data Center Infrastructure with NFV

By Rory Lidstone April 13, 2016

High performance networking software company 6WIND has entered into a new partnership with Kalray, a provider of acceleration solutions for data centers. Announced in conjunction with the Open Server Summit in Santa Clara and the Cloud Security Expo in London, this partnership will help accelerate networking and storage infrastructure for data centers.

In particular, the partnership will combine Kalray's KONIC-80 Smart NICs with 6WIND's 6WINDGate packet processing software to facilitate high throughput applications in software define networking (SDN), network function virtualization (NFV) and data center networking.

When it comes to tackling the requirements of NFV and SDN, there are few companies more qualified than 6WIND. Last year, 6WIND received a sizeable investment from Cisco on the back of 6WIND’s NFV expertise as part of Cisco’s digital strategy. More recently, 6WIND completed NFV testing of its Turbo IPsec application on Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) ProLiant servers and Spirent load generators.

"High performance networking software is a requirement for SDN and NFV solutions to compete against legacy architectures," said Eric Carmès, 6WIND founder and CEO. "Combining 6WINDGate packet processing software with Kalray's KONIC smart NIC enables networking solutions on x86 servers that rival incumbent vendors in performance and cost."

The combined solution being developed by Kalray and 6WIND is based on the former’s MPPA (Massively Parallel Processor Array) high speed I/O processor, billed as an ideal and unique solution to manage low latency, low power and high data throughput applications in data center networking and storage infrastructure environments. It includes all the basic software building blocks required, including Linux and PCIe drivers, along with OpenDataPlane across platform APIs. The Kalray KONIC-80 smart NIC is capable of sustaining an 80GbE line rate with encryption and decryption performed on the fly.

Meanwhile, the 6WINDGate packet processing software integrates with Kalray KONIC-80 smart NIC, delivering critical performance to networking applications while fully synchronizing with Linux so no changes are required to the OS and management. In addition, 6WINDGate includes a fast path architecture that removes Linux performance bottlenecks.
