2017 CLOC Institute to be Held May 9-11 at Bellagio Resort in Las Vegas

The Corporate Legal Operations Consortium (CLOC) will hold its 2nd Annual CLOC Institute on May 9-11, 2017 at the Bellagio Resort in Las Vegas. Known as the largest gathering of legal operations professionals in the world, this year's conference will feature more than 70 sessions and 120 speakers, many from large, multinational companies, including: Oracle, Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Cisco, Pfizer, GE, Liberty Mutual, DHL, Shell, Microsoft, Adobe, Accenture, Paypal, Veritas, HPE and many more.

The three-day event will also include key technology providers such as Lexis Nexis, LSOs such as Elevate, and elite law firms such as Baker McKenzie, among many other industry players. Major law schools will also have representatives, including Harvard University, Stanford University, Michigan State University and Suffolk University.

"The CLOC Institute brings together the entire legal ecosystem: legal operations professionals, in-house counsel, outside counsel, technology providers, educational institutions and more," said Connie Brenton, CEO and chairwoman of CLOC and senior director of legal operations at NetApp. "The Institute offers attendees three days to share best practices and key learnings around CLOC's 12 core competencies. All sessions are tactical, offering information and guidance that people can take back to the office and implement right away. The Institute also allows for unrivaled networking in an environment that's truly open and inclusive. Finally, some portion of the three days will be spent working on how to transform corporate legal services delivery into a much more efficient market. Right now it's broken."

Session highlights and speakers include:

  • "Was It Something I Said?: Advanced Workshop on the Role of Personality in a Successful Law Department," featuring Larry Richard of LayerBrain (pre-session on May 8);
  • "The Future is Closer Than You Think: A Conversation with Richard Susskind," featuring Richard Susskind, author of "Tomorrow's Lawyers";
  • "Legal Operations Maturity Model: How Do You Rate?";
  • "Beyond the Hype about AI: Practical Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Today's Law Department";
  • "Knowledge Management: What, Why and How"; and
  • "Big Thinker Panel: CLOC's Magna Carta for the Corporate Legal Services Industry," (two-part session).

"We envision a corporate legal services industry that offers the people, technology, processes and knowledge bases that small, medium and large businesses need to excel in their respective marketplaces," said Jeff Franke, corporate secretary of CLOC and senior director of global legal operations at Yahoo, Inc. "The Institute brings all of our industry segments' key players together under one roof, helping to accelerate our mission of bringing order to chaos-both at the individual entity level and at the industry level. Prior to CLOC defining the legal ops 12 core competencies, this discipline didn't even have a clear set of focal points and everyone was fighting to figure out what is in-scope and out of scope within the function. And at the macro level, while people talk about the need for 'change' in the industry, no one is working to define what that means: we'll take the first step to creating a Magna Carta for change in the corporate legal services space; we'll help define and promote the conversation. We'll bring in all of the key participants: law schools, regulators, law firms, corporations, technology providers, LSOs and other non-law firm service providers to try to help sort out what change needs to take place first-now."
