The New Review: Critics: ON THE MOVE LATEST APP

(Observer (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) For anyone who grew up squinting at the pixellated, greenish screen of an Atari, it's sometimes impossible to believe quite what a mobile phone is now capable of doing. Modern Combat 5: Blackout (Gameloft, iOS/Android, pounds 4.99), a portable Call of Duty equivalent that squeezes an FPS into your pocket, has graphics that would have seemed unfeasibly high-spec just a few years ago. Controlling modern military man Caydan Phoenix, the bite-size single player missions that make up the story are well suited to the medium and the non-story elements do a good job of breaking up the gun-toting action.

The drawback, as always with this type of game, is the controls. The onscreen sticks and buttons are easily mis-hit, particularly infuriating in multiplayer when a grenade is lobbed at the wrong time. The developers haven't yet included controller integration on iOS but it's promised for a future update.
