County, sheriff's office continue Odyssey talks [The Brownsville Herald, Texas :: ]
(Brownsville Herald (TX) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) June 24--Conversations continue between Cameron County and the Cameron County Sheriff's Office in the aftermath of a memo that nearly changed the county's entire data-sharing interface.
County Judge Carlos Cascos said last week that the county is still in talks with Sheriff Omar Lucio after his employee, Jail Administrator Mike Leinart, sent a memo to county officials announcing the jail would no longer enter data into Odyssey, a content management database used by several county departments.
Human Resources Director Arnold Flores said that action would effectively wreck the system, which is used by judges, attorneys, county employees and the public, by passing along the data entry work to another department.
Leinart's email, which led to the calling of a special meeting on June 2, was not discussed.
The Commissioners' Court held the meeting to stop the Sheriff's Office from transitioning back to handwritten reports, which officials said would affect the way several other county departments interact with the program.
Leinart's memo had said the Jail Division would suspend usage of Odyssey beginning June 4, but commissioners quickly petitioned Lucio over the threat.
Lucio said he was advised not to comment on the problems his staff were having with the software, citing advice from a private attorney he hired himself.
At the meeting, Lucio agreed to continue using the system until after the county had time to discuss the issues.
The Commissioners' Court on June 19 discussed the acquisition of 70 laptops to allow sheriff deputies to enter data from the field.
Cascos said because there was no identified funding source, the item was tabled until one could be found.
