TCRA steps up efforts to fight cybercrime [Citizen, The (Tanzania)]

In a bid to fight cybercrime and other threats associated with new media technologies, the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) is finalising the establishment of the department that will be charged with task of responding to cyber security incidents.
TZ-CERT, short form for Tanzania Computer Emergency Response Team, will have the responsibility of coordinating response to cyber security incidents at the national level and will cooperate with regional and international entities involved in the management of cyber security incidents.
This was said yesterday on the sidelines of a two-day conference organised by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) of the University of Dar es Salaam, titled 'Harnessing the Fruits of New Media Technologies in Tanzania.' "Soon this will be here to help us not only in fighting against cybercrime, but will also help us with the proper use of the new media technologies," said TCRA's director of Information and Communication Technologies, Dr Joseph Kilongola.
He said that the fundamental objective of the National CERT (TZ-CERT) is to ensure a high and effective level of network and information security within the country and to develop a culture of network and information security for the benefit of the entire community the government, citizens, consumers, enterprises and public sector organisations thus contributing to the smooth and safer functioning of on-line activities.
For his part, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange Professor Florence Luoga, said that the advancement of new technologies has helped a lot in terms of research and other knowledge sharing.
