(Bangor Daily News (ME) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) June 10--BANGOR, Maine -- The Federal Communications Commission will give Maine broadband providers $5,358,043 to deliver high-speed Internet access to schools and libraries, according to a prepared statement released by U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King on Tuesday.

"In today's high-speed world, there is no commodity more valuable than information, which is why broadband connectivity is more important than ever before -- particularly in a rural state like Maine," Collins and King said in the joint statement."In order for our communities and students to keep pace, schools and libraries need fast and reliable access to the Internet." The $5.4 million for Maine is part of a $450 million award that will be distributed nationally, the release said.

Maine Department of Education officials were unavailable for comment on Tuesday afternoon.
