Lonestar Cell MTN sponsors spelling competition [New Dawn, The (Liberia)]
(New Dawn, The (Liberia) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) As part of its social corporate responsibility and efforts to buttress government's educational drive, Lonestar Cell MTN Foundation on Saturday, sponsored the Ministry of Education Seventh National Annual Spelling Bee competition.
The final of the competition was held on Saturday at the Monrovia City Hall. Lonestar Cell MTN Foundation has pledged its commitment to continue to support the education sector of Liberia.
Speaking during the program, Education Minister Etmonia Tarpeh, said reading and spelling have been a serious challenge in Liberian schools. She said the Ministry of Education introduced the innovative program to motivate young people to seek academic excellence.
"This means spelling and reading should not be an annual event, rather, it must be an annual activity in the academic life of our students, and we also need to encourage teachers, parents, education officers, and all partners to be fully involved," she noted.
Minister Tarpeh expressed delight in the theme of the competition, "Promoting Reading and Spelling in Liberia." "I am pleased to be at the seventh Annual Spelling Bee Competition organized by MOE and its partners, including Lonestar Cell MTN. This is a cheerful event bringing us together once again to see a spectacular display of scholarly talents by our best students from grade 4 to 8." According to her, the students were selected from public and private schools in all 15 Counties. She reassured participants of the ministry's commitment to promote reading and spelling in Liberian schools in order to foster academic excellence.
Minister Tarpeh indicated that the ministry is pleased with the quality of the competition, which continues to improve each year and that most parents and students across the country have shown increased interest in the competition.
"We are exploring avenues for the winners of the annual spelling bee competition to participate in future international spelling bee competitions, because participating in the competition will not only heighten their profile and networking but will primarily broaden their academic horizons.
Also speaking, the Foundation Manager of Lonestar Cell MTN, Miatta Walker Pearson, said Lonestar Cell MTN, is proud to be a major sponsor of the event and promised the company's commitment to buttressing government's educational drive According to her, Lonestarcell MTN is not only a GSM company that provides telecommunication services to its customers, but also impacts the lives of subscribers and the country at large.
The Lonestar Cell MTN Foundation Manager promised the company's continued commitment to the competition and admonished participants and winners to continue to strive for excellence and greater heights in their endeavors.
