TSSAA, test prep company partner to offer discounted SAT/ACT software [The Knoxville News-Sentinel, Tenn. :: ]

(Knoxville News-Sentinel (TN) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) May 30--A test-prep software company has partnered with the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association to offer discounted ACT and SAT programs to students around the state.

The goal is to "level the playing field" for students who may not be able to afford prep courses before taking these standardized tests, which are among the measures colleges use when admitting students, said Lisa Caputo, director of the Sponsorship Alliance Programs at eKnowledge.

eKnowledge created the software, which includes practice tests, questions and instructional video, and typically sells the programs for $250. It will offer the discounted programs for $20.

"Anytime we can provide a service to our schools that helps young people, we're going to do it," said Bernard Childress, executive director of the TSSAA.

TSSAA has been sending information to leaders and athletic directors at its more than 400 member schools, Childress said.

In 2005, eKnowledge formed the SAT/ACT Donation Project and created partnerships with athletes from the National Football League and Major League Baseball and hundreds of corporations, foundations and not-for-profit organizations. Through the program it has donated more than 207,000 SAT and ACT prep programs, which the company values at more than $48 million.

Students pay the $20 to cover material and shipping costs.

This is the first time the program is being offered in Tennessee. Childress said he learned of it through the high school athletic association in Georgia, which then suggested eKnowledge consider expanding to Tennessee.

"We've had some great stories from people saying how much its helped their child prepare for the SAT and ACT," Childress said.

Students in Tennessee can order their discounted copy at www.eKnowledge.com/KnoxNews.
