Second Saturday is your first choice for fun [The Meadville Tribune, Pa. :: ]
(Meadville Tribune (PA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) May 08--MEADVILLE -- "If you're bored in Meadville on Saturday, it's your own fault." That's the word from Amber Wellington, marketing and development coordinator of the Second Saturday Community Market at downtown Meadville's historic Market House. From this afternoon through Saturday night, local businesses and organizations are banding together to present a weekend that will be long remembered.
Today, the festive downtown salute to both Allegheny College's graduation and Mother's Day kicks off from 4 to 8 p.m. Horse-drawn carriage rides, an open house at the Market House with lots of vendors -- including some very interesting newbies -- on hand to visit with customers and lots of downtown businesses staying open to welcome both shoppers and wanderers are just a few highlights of the evening ahead.
Imagine for just a moment enjoying the clop, clop, clop of horses pulling your carriage -- without having to worry about staying thoroughly covered with blankets, scarves and mittens. With the trees of Chestnut Street in bloom, tonight is a real-life version of Currier and Ives Does Spring.
Saturday, celebrate the first glimpse of spring at the Market House from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the Second Saturday Community Market's first market of the 2014 season. The event is free and open to the public.
In addition to a full Second Saturday complement of 25 vendors and exhibitors, Market Square will be abuzz with live music and entertainment as well as demonstrations of beekeeping, easel painting and spinning and weaving, to name just a few. Don't forget the regular outdoor vendors -- and all the wonders offered for sale inside.
Live music is provided by Matt Burchfield from 9 to 10:30 a.m.; Michael Wayne, 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; and The Jackpines, 12:30 to 2 p.m.
Not just for kids, the ever-popular Magic Steve will rove about the square from 9 to 11 a.m.; face painting is offered by The Learning Center and Meadville Council on the Arts' ever-popular Kids' Craft Station is open for lots of fun business.
Second Saturday's presenting sponsor is Ainsworth Pet Nutrition. Grant support is provided by Erie Arts & Culture/Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and it's endorsed by Meadville Council on the Arts.
Meadville's celebration of all things local fills Market Square on Market Street, just one block north of Chestnut Street, on the second Saturday of each month from May through September. Like the weekly farmer's market that surrounds the Market House every Saturday through the outdoor market season, it takes place rain or shine.
