Explore IT: Calgary Girls Discover Information Technology
(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) CALGARY, Alberta, May 6 -- SAIT Polytechnic issued the following news release: More than 600 girls from Grade 9 classes around Calgary are exploring the world of science, engineering and information technology at SAIT Polytechnic, Mount Royal University and the University of Calgary today.
The 15th annual Explore IT event exposes the young women to the high-tech world through interactive workshops, discovery sessions and one-on-one mentoring at all three campuses. In the last 10 years, attendance at the one-day event has more than quadrupled.
"More young women are starting to discover their personal interest in technology and the career opportunities that come with it," says Mo Keshavjee, organizer of Explore IT at SAIT. "Many programs in SAIT's School of Information and Communications Technologies have a 100% employment rate." At SAIT, girls get a chance to use artistic, technical and creative skills to design a fun and interactive 2D game. Students will also learn the secrets of radio and television broadcasting and have an opportunity to create their own mobile app.
At Mount Royal University, the IT fair includes an aviation simulator where students will practise a smooth take-off. The young women will also learn about computer programming and discover the popular pastime of geocaching.
At the University of Calgary's Schulich School of Engineering, participants will build and program their own robots. The girls will also have a hands-on opportunity to learn the skills to assemble a simple circuit board with electronic components.
Keynote speaker Laurel Sim will stop by all three post-secondary locations to inspire the girls. An award winning project manager, Sim is the past-president for the Project Management Institute in Southern Alberta. She is a sports enthusiast who brings energy into everything she touches and is continually driving to succeed.
