BRIEF: AT&T considering Greensboro for high-speed Internet [News & Record, Greensboro, N.C. :: ]

(News & Record (Greensboro, NC) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) April 21--GREENSBORO -- AT&T is considering Greensboro for its ultra-high-speed internet service.

The service, called U-verse with GigaPower, delivers up to 1 Gigabit per second of content, faster than the fastest consumer Internet service available, the company said in a news release.

Greensboro is one candidate among 21 metropolitan areas the company is considering for the service.

AT&T has already announced that it will provide the service in Winston-Salem and Raleigh-Durham.

The first operational GigaPower city is Austin, Tex.

AT&T's GigaPower is a direct competitor to Google Fiber, which began building a similar network in Kansas City in 2011.

AT&T and Google Fiber are both considering Charlotte and Google Fiber may also go up against AT&T in Raleigh-Durham.

Other cities on the list that AT&T released today include Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles and Kansas City.

AT&T said it will talk with local leaders to discuss local infrastructure, potential demand and other issues, according to the news release.
