BRIEF: Man buys Hummer with bad check in Whitehall, then resells it, police say [The Morning Call (Allentown, Pa.) :: ]
(Morning Call (Allentown, PA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Feb. 07--A man who last year paid for a Hummer with a bad check for $18,600 at the Lehigh Valley Auto Auction sold the vehicle months later to another man for $8,500, police said.
Robert D. Schappell Jr., 42, of Deer Lake, Schuylkill County, was charged Thursday with theft and deceptive business practices for selling a vehicle that was not his, state police at Schuylkill Haven said.
Schappell wrote the bad check for the 2005 Hummer at the July 24 auto auction in Whitehall Township, police said. Because the check bounced, the auction never gave him title to the vehicle, police said.
On Nov. 15, Schappell allegedly sold the Hummer to Larry Luckenbill of Schuylkill Haven. Police said he took the $8,500 even though he did not have title to the vehicle.
Schappell was arraigned Thursday by District Judge James R. Ferrier. In addition to the theft and deception charges, he was charged with receiving stolen property. Ferrier sent him to Schuylkill County Prison under $50,000 bail.
Police said they still are investigating Schappell. They asked that anyone who may have had similar experiences with him contact state police at 570-593-2000.
