Indore's very own Singham [DNA : Sunday]
(DNA : Sunday Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) "Notwithstanding the fame his family members command, constable Ranjeet Singh discharges his duty manning traffic on city squares. Over the years he came to be known as the 'dancing cop' who effectively keeps order at the High Court square.
One of Singh's brothers Kunwar Amarjeet Singh gained fame in the Dil Dosti Dance television show. Another brother passed out of IIM and gained prominence in the field of management. But Ranjeet likes his job. He claims that the passion to contribute to society keeps him on his toes.
His family keeps him ticking. They keep reminding him that Indore has the worst traffic. "I don't like what I hear. I want to ensure that at least when I man the square, the traffic is smooth," he told After Hrs.
Nowadays, Ranjeet is busy creating awareness among school children on traffic laws. "They are our future. We must inculcate good traffic sense in them and ask them to be good citizens," he said.
Once aware, the children will not only follow rules, but coax their parents in doing so too, he added. Ranjeet, also known among his colleagues as the Singham cop, starts his day with a 10 km run and loves going to multiplexes to watch movies in his spare time.
He has been working in the police department since the last 15- years and was never good at studies but one thing that he admired the most was his father's passion towards his duty.
"My father Kunwar Shivji Singh was respected for his work and not because of his post. I always wanted to be like him. People never feared, but respected him," reminiscenced the cop who was recently felicitated for his work by a telecom company.
But if you think that everything was smooth sailing for the cop on the road then you are mistaken! He had his share of ups and downs as well. "On duty, I had an accident at Navlakha Chauraha in 2008. Four of my fingers were fractured and I was not able to work for a year," he rued.
Ranjeet is often offered roses by passersby's'. The manner in which he controls traffic has also caught the attention of senior police officers, who feel that he is projecting a positive image of the police.
When asked why the public love to follow him and not the other cops posted at other squares of Indore, he said, "I don't agree with this. Everybody works to the best of their capabilities in our department. Maybe god has made me more energetic or more attractive," he smiled.
Ranjeet recalls an incident when his son Vivek Singh said," Dad, I am really proud of you and your work." It was an electrifying feeling, he beamed.
Daily routine Starts the day saluting the tricolor atop the High Court building Everyday, he helps a blind old woman, Sohan Bai, who showers him with blessings Helps a physically challenged Hemant at 10.30 am to maneuver a U-turn at the High Court square. Rajneet claims he does it to see Hemant smile Accepts greetings from children of SICA school at 4 pm. The school gave him a 1000 page autograph book to sign that read, 'Hamare Bachche Fan Hai Aapke'. They call him Singham.
Ranjeet loves Benarasi paan. And his fans make sure that the cop has his share of the paan on a daily basis." Credit:Asheesh Kumar Shukla (c) 2014 @ 2014 DILIGENT MEDIA CORPORATION LTD. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
