The Board of Directors of San Domenico School has announced today that
it will begin admitting boys to its High School in the fall of 2015. The
Board's unanimous decision to extend co-education has been ratified by
the Dominican Sisters.
Founded in 1850 by the Dominican Sisters and established as California's
first independent school, San Domenico will now be the only Pre-K-12
co-ed school in Marin and the closest independent school to San
Francisco that offers a combined day and boarding program for high
school students. The boarding program is global in reach with students
from seven countries.
"The Board of Directors of San Domenico has been evaluating the
strategic question of co-education at our High School over the past 10
years and, after conducting extensive market research and two
comprehensive feasibility studies, we have concluded the time is right
for us to embark on this new direction," said Glenn Snyder, Chairman of
the Board of Directors. "Now, as we extend co-education into our High
School, we are confident that we will offer young women and men together
what San Domenico has always been known for - an exceptional,
student-centered academic experience that prepares young leaders who
will make a positive difference in our world."
In the Dominican tradition of adapting to the changing needs of the
times, San Domenico previously made the successful transition to
co-education when they welcomed young boys to its Primary and Middle
Schools beginning in 1973. As part of the extension to co-education at
the High School, San Domenico will continue to offer a rigorous college
preparatory program that includes a full complement of AP and Honors
classes, as well as co-curricular offerings for girls and boys including
athletics, robotics, fine and performing arts, service, social justice
and environmental sustainability.
"This is a significant moment for San Domenico to innovate for the
future and to expand its unique academic, cultural and geographic assets
to a broader audience," said Jeffery Wack, PhD and President of JT Wack
and Associates, a marketing consultancy that advises independent schools
nationwide. "A global point-of-view is what is truly unique about San
Domenico's academic environment. For high school girls and boys who want
a diverse learning experience, they don't have to wait for college or do
a semester abroad to get an international perspective."
