PREP BOYS BASKETBALL CLASS 2A SECTIONAL PREVIEW: Loaded Warriors look to repeat in 2A
EMMA, Feb 25, 2013 (Goshen News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Westview is defending champion and the Warriors have captured four of the last five titles in this 2A high school boys basketball sectional.
Westview has enjoyed its share of postseason success, having won 16 sectional, four regional, two semistate and two state championships. The Warriors were 2A state champions in 1999 and 2000, becoming the first team to win back-to-back state titles in the current four-class system.
This year's sectional opens on Tuesday with the host Warriors (18-3) and Bremen Lions (10-10) colliding at 6 p.m. followed by the Fremont Eagles (12-8) and LaVille Lancers (15-6) around 7:30.
On Friday, the Central Noble Cougars (5-15) face the Bremen-Westview winner at 6 while the Prairie Heights Panthers (11-11) take on the Fremont-LaVille winner around 7:30.
The championship is Saturday at 7 p.m.
The sectional winner advances to the North Judson regional. The Westview champion meets the winner from Wheeler in the second game on Saturday, March 9 around noon. The 10 a.m. opener matches the winners from South Adams and Winamac. The championship tips off at 8:30.
The Warriors and Bremen did not meet during the regular season. They squared off in last year's sectional finale with Westview posting a 63-47 victory.
Top players for the Warriors are 6-4 senior Kyle Miller, 6-2 senior Nic Raber, 6-3 senior Brett Yoder, 5-10 junior Jordyn Bontrager, 5-11 junior Jamar Weaver and 6-3 sophomore Chandler Aspy.
Bremen's leading player is 6-4 senior Ethan Pike. Others are 6-3 senior Jacob Box, 5-10 senior Don Browning, 6-4 senior Ethan Pike, 6-2 senior Phoenix, 6-0 senior Reid Zellmer, 6-2 junior Kai Slough and 5-11 sophomore Sam Lacher.
Fremont and LaVille also didn't play this season.
The top player for Fremont is 6-2 senior Tyler Jenkins. Others are 5-9 senior Jake Bryant, 5-9 senior Austin Corcimiglia, 6-2 senior Jordan Schmucker, 5-8 junior Alex Beams, 5-8 junior Nate Beatty, 5-11 junior Kaleb Haynes, 6-1 junior Logan Peele and 6-1 junior Tony LaRosa.
Leaders for LaVille are 6-5 senior Nick Amor, 6-4 senior Jeff Haygood, 5-11 senior Andrew Hostetler, 6-3 sophomore Alec Baker, 5-10 sophomore Blake Berger and 5-9 sophomore Ryan Bettcher.
Central Noble lost to Westview 66-56 back on Dec. 8 at Emma.
The Cougars and Bremen didn't play this season.
The Cougars are led by 6-2 senior Sam Jank, 5-10 senior Kevin Kennedy, 5-11 senior Tanner Likes, 6-1 senior Alex Vice, 6-3 junior Connor McCoy, 5-8 sophomore Brock Noe and 5-10 freshman E.J. Andrews.
Prairie Heights and Fremont have played twice this season. Fremont won 68-66 on Jan. 10 in the NECC tournament and Heights came out on top 61-54 on Jan. 25 at Brushy Prairie.
Six-three sophomore Jacob Heller is the top player for Prairie Heights. Other leaders are 5-10 senior Jackie Owens, 5-9 junior Bobby Blum, 5-9 junior Corey Johnson, 5-10 junior Zach Shepherd, 5-9 junior Dylan Stayner, 5-9 junior Kyler West and 6-1 sophomore Spencer Hess.
