American Society of Civil Engineers:
What do you get when you take bright, engaging, creative high school
students and set them in front of a pile of Popsicle sticks; with the
task of building a bridge, you get some amazing results! The Popsicle
Stick Bridge Competition is a FREE event that brings together hundreds
of local high school students to participate in a full day celebration
of math, science and engineering. Sponsored by the American Society of
Civil Engineers' Younger Member Forums, student groups are challenged to
design and build a Popsicle stick bridge based on a set of guidelines.
At the competition, students submit a technical design report; present
their finished bridge to their peers and local engineering
professionals. Then as a final challenge, test the strength of their
bridge on a loading machine. The competition is a fun way for students
to think critically, learn to problem solve, be innovative and
collaborative, and recognize the importance of pursuing higher education.
